Watermelon Seed Milk Is The Latest Dairy-Free Innovation

Dicembre 9, 2024

Força Foods, a California-based Latino-owned company, has introduced a new plant-based milk called MILKish, which they claim is the first made from watermelon seeds. MILKish is designed for both sustainability and nutrition, combining pea protein with watermelon seeds—a crop touted as a “climate-friendly superfood” due to its minimal water needs (99% less than almonds). The product, free from soy, gluten, nuts, sugar, carrageenan, and artificial ingredients, offers 50 calories, 2g of protein, 35% of the RDA for calcium, and notable amounts of vitamin E, vitamin D, and potassium per serving. It comes in Unsweetened Vanilla and Unsweetened Original flavors, available online in six-packs of 32 oz cartons for $29.99, with plans to launch in stores soon.

Research increasingly supports the environmental benefits of plant-based milks over dairy, noting that all non-dairy alternatives—including those packaged in plastic—have a significantly lower environmental impact. A 2023 study in Nutrients emphasized that substituting dairy with fortified plant-based alternatives doesn’t reduce diet quality and dramatically reduces environmental strain. The BBC’s Science Focus also highlights the environmental advantages of plant-based milks over cow’s milk, adding that watermelon seed milk is part of a larger trend among plant-based brands to innovate more sustainable and nutritionally rich options.

Several other brands are making strides in sustainable packaging and nutrient-focused formulas. Oatly has introduced a larger “XL” carton for its barista oat milk to reduce packaging per liter, and Milkadamia now offers flat-packed oat milk, cutting packaging waste by 94%. Califia Farms also launched “Complete Kids” plant-based milk, combining peas, chickpeas, and fava beans for a nutrient-rich blend. Força’s MILKish joins this wave of plant-based innovations aimed at lowering environmental impact while providing health benefits.
